A Rotary Sports Car Mazda Refused to Let Die

In 2003, Mazda introduced the RX-8 (SE3P) after years of dedicated development—driven by a firm belief that the rotary engine must live on.

While the previous-generation RX-7 (FD3S) earned global acclaim in the 1990s, evolving emissions regulations, fuel efficiency demands, and economic shifts made it increasingly difficult to produce. Yet inside Mazda, the rotary spirit endured. The RX-8 was not just a successor—it redefined the rotary sports car as something that could be shared, experienced, and enjoyed by four.

The RX-8’s most iconic design feature—its freestyle rear-hinged doors—offered a distinctive silhouette and unmatched accessibility. Its power came from the 13B-MSP (RENESIS):
